You taught them how to tie their shoelaces, to drive the car, and now they are about to spread their wings and take off in new directions. Honor this right of passage with a photo session- add on a family portrait- and the moment will be remembered forever.
How to prepare for your Senior High School Portrait Session
There is so much to goes into preparing for a senior portrait session. I've created a guide to get your started...
Choose a location- we can discuss options whether it’s a beach vibe, leafy park or urban scene. I’ve had experiences in different spots and can talk with you about the best time of day for what you are looking for. We can discuss options and pick the perfect place. And remember, places close to home can offer the personal touch to the session if you don’t want to venture out and about.
Showcase your accomplishments- bring along your musical instrument, soccer ball, jersey or pointe shoes. This is your time to show off YOU and on location we will have time to do a variety of poses so no need to limit your expression.
Want to bring your pet- Sure! Just make sure you bring along someone to hold the leash when they decide to chase squirrels instead of posing.
Clothing- this is probably the most frequently asked question. You want to look natural, but since this is a special moment in your life- choose an outfit that has a timeless look that fits well and you feel comfortable wearing. You might want one dressy outfit and another more casual. I’d avoid trendy outfits- remember, you will look back on these photos for decades so keeping a more timeless outfit will keep you enjoying these images for a long time. Choose colors that compliment your hair and skin. Solid colors are often preferred but a patterned shirt or shorts paired with a solid top or bottom can give the photo some contrast. And adding a sweater or jacket is sometimes a nice touch. Bring it along on the shoot. We can use it for some of the shots.
Accessorize- do you have a necklace, watch or special hat that has a personal story that you want to feature. Wear it or bring it along. It’s really nice to highlight those family heirlooms that mean something to you and will enhance the images.
Hair and Make-Up- avoid a new hairstyle right before the session. It takes time for you to get used to a new style and if you are worried about your hair, then you won’t feel relaxed…and that will come across in the images. And make-up…if you wear it regularly, than put your best face forward, but don’t overdo it.
College Gear- You’ve committed! Show off your next move and bring along that college merch!
Create a Pinterest Board- if you have some images and ideas that you’ve seen online, make a Pinterest board and share it with me so I can get an idea of what you like. I enjoy the inspiration from other photographer’s work, and will do my best to implement the feeling of the images that you share, but will put my own creative style on the session.
Best Friend Shoot- Book a joint session and make memories together!
Family Photo Shoot Add On- The senior portrait is a great time to make a family photo as well. Senior year is such a milestone, it’s nice to get the whole family together at the start or end of your session to celebrate the moment.
Editing and Touch-Ups- I spend a lot of time editing and creating a large gallery of options for you but I am a tough editor. I work hard to create images that you will like. I will do my best to touch up acne if needed but for the most part, I edit to make you look good by enhancing the brightness of the scene and add some punch. I don’t use harsh filters and like to keep it as natural as possible.
